LEARN THE HISTORY OF KOSCIUSKO
Kosciusko's history is best understood by exploring its earlier name Redbud Springs.
This area of the Natchez Trace was the "Wild West" before settlers moved West of the Mississippi. Land speculators, a cattle industry, taverns and outlaws were part of the landscape here on what was then the American Frontier.
If you wanted a cut of beef, freshwater, or even hard drink Redbud Springs was the destination. David Choate opened an inn and store near the springs. It was called Choates Stand. Due to the bustling of people and merchants, Kosciusko was given the nickname, “The Beehive of the Hills.”
General Andrew Jackson arranged to purchase beef from Choate's Stand, and Jackson's soldiers camped near the springs on what is now the Kosciusko town square.
Both Union and Confederate soldiers used the trace during the Civil War. The old Natchez Trace did not disappear it runs through Kosciusko today where it lives on.
You can still feel the mystique of the old trace as you walk along Natchez street, and explore Choate's Stand and Redbud Springs park.
